    English events and author visits

    Year 3: Stone Age Boy

In order to further develop their comprehension of this point in history, and to further immerse themselves in their English texts: The First Drawing and Stone Age Boy, pupils visited Porth and created their own cave paintings. Every care was taken to leave the caves exactly as we found them, after the event.

Year 5: Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

Chapter 2 of Michael Morpurgo’s book, Kensuke’s Kingdom, is titled, “Water, Water, Everywhere”. In it, the young boy, Michael, describes his first few days aboard the ‘Peggy Sue’, a sailboat his parents have bought to sail around the world, following redundancy.

This week in Year 4, we are trying to experience a little bit of what Michael is going through aboard the boat, the sights, the sounds and the feelings. Not to mention the hard work, dealing with seasickness, his Home Learning (that he’d hoped his parents had forgotten about), as well as everything around him being soaking wet though. We hope that these experiences will help the pupils appreciate and contextualise both the reading and writing more fully whilst being able to write their logbooks using much higher-level vocabulary and with greater insight.

4 SP had a full taste of life in a storm! They showed huge resilience in the strong winds and wintry showers, before warming up with hot chocolate. The weather was more favourable for the other groups. Well done all of you.

Year 5 outdoor cooking inspired by 'The Explorer'

Year Five have been honing their survival skills. Now, they can use knives safely to cut up and prepare food, they can start a fire from scratch using flints without the need for matches and they can use the hot embers to cook their food.

They have been emulating the characters in the Year Five book (The Explorer by Katherine Rundell) and now can empathise with them further.

Our pupils showed wonderful resilience, determination and perseverance in the fire building exercise and thoroughly enjoyed the experience… and the delicious bean stew at the end!

Year 6: Holes by Louis Sachar

A firm Year 6 favourite, Louis Sachar’s 1998 children’s novel, Holes, tells the story of a boy accused of stealing. A judge sentences him to 18 months in a camp where a tyrannical warden has the boys’ digging holes that appear randomly. This text explores the themes of friendship, family relationships, the consequences of choices resulting from fate and destiny, cruelty versus kindness as well as justice in the formal sense and on a personal level too. Pupils (and teachers) are transported to Camp Green Lake, to immerse themselves into the characters within the story.

The Minack Theatre workshop: A Midsummer Night's Dream

We were thrilled to be able to complete a workshop during Shakespeare Week with the amazing team from The Minack theatre. We read extracts from the play and worked on characterisation and how we could utilise our voice in order to perform to an audience.

    Author visit: Maz Evans

Yrs. 4,5 and 6 attended an author event with the fabulous Maz Evans!

Maz read an extract from her new book ‘Oh Maya Gods’ and she explained the rules of the ancient game of Pok-a-Tok which forms part of the story.

The children chose different members of staff to demonstrate the game which caused much mirth and merriment for everyone!

Maz talked to the pupils about her job as a best-selling author, her process for writing and then took questions from the audience.

We all had an amazing time; huge thanks to Simon Pollard, Head of Carclaze, for organising this event.
